But not even the charm of Padalecki can liven up this one-trick pony. (The show even shoots in the actor’s hometown of Austin, Texas).

This is clearly the reason the series was made: to keep one of its bread-and-butter attractions on the network and happily employed. In place of Norris’ cheeseball “badass” is the much softer, more subdued Supernatural star Jared Padalecki. Gone is the ass-kicking Cordell Walker fans of the old series are used to in his place is a tired, possibly alcoholic widower who - we are told but only once is it allegedly really seen - plays by his own rules. Alas, that doesn’t mean what we get is much better. In short, The CW's Walker is the complete antithesis of everything the older version was, which itself wasn’t particularly good. In fact, there is nary a similarity at all to its predecessor, save the name Cordell Walker, and the fact that he is indeed a Texas Ranger. The CW’s take is absolutely nothing like that. It was very much a series of its era and home network, CBS. Imbued in all of this was an often cheesy, overriding sense of machismo - ass-kicking and bad guy-busting in the name of protecting the good ol’ US of A. Its lead, Chuck Norris, is a very specific man. If the show had just chosen to be an original series, rather than a reboot of an iconic series, I think it would have garnered its own following like Jared Padelecki's previous CW run, Supernatural.Walker, Texas Ranger was a very specific show with a very specific audience from a very specific time. The show has changed too much from its namesake to warrant fans of the original to stick around. But it is an enjoyable family drama, it has a good cast of actors/actresses and has benefited from a great list of supporting roles that have elevated several scenes and stories. Walker has its own charm hidden somewhere underneath the classic CW formula of talking about feelings in the hallway, inability to nail emotional scenes, and unrealistic reactions to certain situations. Scenes shown regularly contradict the conversations of the characters that precede it, which leaves me to think that either I missed several minutes of the show, or the series did not get across to the audience what it wanted us to see or feel. It keeps 'telling' you how much of a renegade and a rulebreaker Walker is, yet, we are actually to see anything that supports this. The series has a horrible tendency to 'tell' not 'show'. Walker also often comes across as a side character in his own show, an issue that seems to be arising more and more in television.

It lacks the charm, charisma, and the action packed 'cheese' that the 90's show was known for as well as the star power of its titular character, which makes it hard to avoid a comparison between the two shows. While some shows benefit from being a reboot, spinoff, or continuation of an already established and beloved franchise, 'Walker' actually suffers from it. This show suffers from one large elephant in the room Its name. I had high hopes because I enjoyed Jared in Supernatural but I feel this wasn't the right role for him. The twists are obvious and the relationships are forced.

Sometimes they switch topics without finishing the previous one.Īll in all the show is misguided and uninteresting. The dialog is horribly written and the actors delivery comes off choppy and unnatural. His partner bluntly tells him she doesn't want to trust him because he is a white male regardless of how many times he tries to help her and the community. His partner and Captain constantly talk down to Walker because he has white privilege despite the fact he is labeled a legendary Ranger. They approach the issues bluntly and without creativity or originality which unfortunately makes them cringy or unintentionally funny. He lacks charisma and energy making it hard to like him.Īs for the show itself, it tries and ultimately fails to address the topics of racism and sexism. First I feel that Jared was miscast as Walker. This show is hindered by a lot if factors.
